For many years, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has limited the landscaping
of highway medians at or near intersections. These limitations, detailed in Index 546 of the
Benz, Robert J. Guidelines for the Effective Use of Flexible Pylons for Congestion Mitigation, Access Management, and Safety Improvement, Transportation Research Board of the National Academies, Washington, D.C., Texas Transportation Institute (in progress, end date August 2012)
The objectives of this project are to develop guidelines on/to:
(1) When and where pylons are suitable for implementation,
(2) Which type of pylons (curb mounted or fixed to pavement) is suitable for various applications,
